Apple may be planning one of the biggest camera upgrades in iPhone history. According to leaker Digital Chat Station, the company is internally testing a 200MP periscope telephoto camera for a future iPhone model. This follows a separate report indicating Apple is also evaluating a 200MP main sensor, meaning both primary cameras on a future iPhone could potentially hit the 200-megapixel mark, just like Galaxy S26 Ultra.
If accurate, it would mark a dramatic shift in Apple’s camera strategy. The current iPhone 16 Pro Max tops out at 48MP across its rear camera system. Moving to 200MP would put Apple in territory that Samsung has occupied since the Galaxy S23 Ultra launched with a 200MP main sensor back in 2023.
iPhone with 200MP Camera Rumors
Before excitement runs too high, just wait. Digital Chat Station notes that these camera systems are still in the early evaluation phase.
Based on the current timeline, these 200MP sensors are unlikely to reach iPhone users before 2028 at the earliest. That means we are likely looking at the iPhone 20 series or beyond, not the iPhone 18 Pro Max or iPhone Ultra lineup that fans are already anticipating.

Why 200MP Makes Sense for Apple’s Next Step
The jump to 200MP is not just about resolution numbers. Higher megapixel sensors enable more aggressive pixel binning, where the camera combines multiple pixels into one to produce cleaner, brighter shots in low light. Samsung’s implementation of the Galaxy S series showed that 200MP sensors can deliver excellent results even in challenging conditions when paired with good software processing.
Apple’s strength has always been computational photography, using software to make hardware punch above its weight. A 200MP sensor paired with Apple Intelligence-powered image processing could give the company a significant advantage in detail, zoom quality, and low-light performance simultaneously.
The periscope telephoto angle is particularly interesting. Apple introduced its first periscope lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, offering 5x optical zoom. A 200MP periscope lens could enable far greater zoom reach while maintaining image quality, which can close the gap with Android rivals like Galaxy S27 Ultra or S28 Ultra that are also expected to offer high-resolution telephoto sensors.
What This Means for Samsung
Samsung needs to ensure the users are happy with their camera performance, so they don’t look for the iPhone’s 200MP camera. Now with Galaxy S26 Ultra, many users have complained about the zoom issue and low-light performance. First, Samsung needs to address all these minor but critical issues, so users will not compare it with the iPhone camera.
For now, iPhone 18 Pro remains the near-term focus for Apple, expected to bring camera refinements within the existing sensor framework.
